Knowing all the white keys on the piano does not make you a better guitar player; if so, one who knows basic theory or can read music should be a good piano player, but, in reality, it is not happening.
Then, how did they become good at playing piano?
They studied how chords work related to melody in the music, knowing various voicings to support the song, and improvising naturally followed if they knew these things well.
And we should do the same on the guitar.
You better start today because what you practice today may come to you only after 10 months if you do your best.
Peter Bernstein suggested that, "...you may want to know how the guitar works, but that should connected to your ear..." This is the way the guitar works in music. Every music lover who plays guitar should know this concept on the fretboard.
